Sex positive psychosexual and relationship therapy

Our sexual self evolves throughout our lifespan. Most people will be confronted with difficulties or changes at some point in their lives. Sex and relationship therapy is a space for you to explore yourself and your relationships and consider how things could change. Within a compassionate, sex positive therapy space you can become more familiar with your sexual self and find tools to support change.

Sexual Issues

Each of us is different and our perception of an experience will vary. You may find it helpful to have a label, or feel that it doesn’t fit for you. The list below describes some common sexual issues that we can explore in psychosexual therapy.

  • Early ejaculation (premature ejaculation)
  • Unreliable erections (erectile dysfunction or disorder)
  • Loss of desire (hypoactive sexual desire)
  • Difficulty reaching orgasm (anorgasmia or delayed ejaculation)
  • Genital pain (vaginismus, dyspareunia, sexual pain penetration disorder)
  • Compulsive sexual behaviours (sex addiction)
  • Sexual difficulties resulting from medical treatments
  • Sex and intimacy through the lifespan
  • Body image and self confidence

Understanding your Sexual Self

The variety and diversity of human sexuality is breath taking. Every one of us has a unique sexual self which continues to evolve throughout our lives. Psychosexual therapy is a place to explore and become friends with your sexual fingerprint.  By getting to know yourself better, we can create the opportunity to build a fulfilling sex life that is unique to your needs and desires.

Relationships

Relationships take many forms, and it is normal for them to feel difficult at times. The state of our relationships will likely impact on our sexual fulfilment, and vice versa, meaning that psychosexual and relationship therapy are often entwined. Exploring your needs, values and communication skills are regular features of the therapy journey.

FAQs

Should I come for psychosexual therapy with my partner?

In general, if you’re in a relationship it is helpful to come to psychosexual therapy with your partner/s. This is because your difficulty is happening within the context of your relationship. When you come to therapy together we can explore the dynamic and you can find ways to move through the difficulty together. However, there are always things to explore if you decide to access therapy on your own.

What is psychosexual therapy?

Great question! Psychosexual therapy is a space to explore and understand your sexual self. Typically we start with an assessment session to see if psychosexual therapy could be helpful for you. We then have a few sessions where we will explore lots of the factors connected to your difficulty. This allows us to have a fuller picture before making a plan for how we would like to work towards your therapy goals. Once you get to this step you will often be given different tasks to explore at home so that you can develop new skills and get to know yourself better.

Can I talk to you before booking a therapy session?

When looking for a therapist/counsellor it is worth chatting to a few people to see who you feel comfortable talking to and work out who might be a good fit for you. We can arrange a free 20 minute introductory call/Zoom which is an opportunity to get to know one another a little.

I feel uncomfortable talking about sex, won’t it be really awkward?

Honestly, you will probably find it a little strange at first. We don’t get many spaces to talk openly about sex and having these conversations with a stranger can feel really unusual. Practicing talking about sex is really helpful for a fulfilling sexual life and over time it becomes more normal feeling.

This feels really personal, how confidential is it?

Before starting therapy you will be sent paperwork explaining confidentiality in more detail and this will always be discussed in your first session. Please contact Jess (jess.hoar@proton.me) if you would like to read or discuss the confidentiality information in full.

Fees and Practicalities

Psychosexual and relationship therapy sessions are delivered online using Zoom and you will be sent a recurring link to access. If you are attending with partner/s you can either attend using the same device or join from different locations. You will need to be in a private space.

Sessions last for 50 minutes and cost £55 for individuals or £65 for couples/other constellations.
